Understanding German tax classes (Steuerklassen)

Germany withholds income tax through six tax classes based on marital status and household situation. This calculator uses Steuerklasse I, which applies to single, unmarried, divorced, or widowed employees — the most common case for a standalone salary estimate.

  • Class I: Single, divorced, or widowed employees.
  • Class II: Single parents, with an additional relief allowance.
  • Class III / V: Married couples with a significant income gap, splitting the tax burden unevenly to improve monthly cash flow (settled at year-end tax return).
  • Class IV: Married couples with similar incomes.
  • Class VI: Second or additional jobs, taxed at the highest rate with no allowances.

Married and multi-class scenarios are not yet modeled in this calculator — only Steuerklasse I. If you need those, tell us via Contact.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on a €50,000 salary in Germany?

For a single person with no children on tax class I in 2026, income tax on a €50,000 gross salary is roughly €10,500, plus around €10,900 in social insurance contributions, leaving a net salary of about €28,600 per year.

What are German tax classes (Steuerklassen)?

Germany has six tax classes (Steuerklasse I to VI) that determine how much income tax is withheld from your paycheck, based on marital status and whether you hold multiple jobs. This calculator assumes Steuerklasse I, which applies to single, unmarried employees.

Does this calculator include church tax?

No. Church tax (Kirchensteuer), 8–9% of income tax depending on the state, only applies to registered members of certain religious communities and is excluded from this estimate.
